A GATE paper carries 100 marks across 65 questions in 3 hours. General Aptitude contributes 10 questions worth 15 marks and the subject contributes 55 questions worth 85 marks. This structure is common to Statistics (ST), Data Science (DA), Mathematics (MA) and most other GATE papers. Questions appear in three formats: MCQ, MSQ and NAT. Negative marking applies only to MCQs, at one third of a mark for a 1 mark question and two thirds of a mark for a 2 mark question. MSQ and NAT questions carry no negative marking and no partial marking.

Duration is 3 hours. The paper is conducted as a Computer Based Test in English, and an on screen virtual calculator is provided. Physical calculators are not permitted.
The subject section contributes more than five times the marks of General Aptitude. That said, 15 marks is 15 percent of the paper for a section that needs roughly three weeks of total preparation across five months. Students who skip General Aptitude entirely are giving away the cheapest marks available to them.

The exact split between MCQ, MSQ and NAT changes from year to year. GATE does not announce it in advance and it is not fixed. Questions carry either 1 mark or 2 marks.

How to Attempt Each Type
This is where most of the avoidable marks are lost, so it is worth being precise.
MCQ Strategy
Negative marking here is real and it compounds. Three wrong 2 mark MCQs cost you two full marks, which is an entire question thrown away.
- Read every option before selecting. GATE frequently places a plausible near answer immediately before the correct one.
- Use elimination only when you can justify why an option is wrong, not when it merely feels unlikely.
- If you can eliminate two of four options confidently, a guess is mathematically reasonable. If you cannot eliminate anything, leave it.
- Never guess blindly to fill the screen. The paper does not reward attempted questions, it rewards correct ones.
MSQ Strategy
This is the format students handle worst, because the absence of negative marking creates false confidence.
- There is no partial credit. Getting three of four options right earns you nothing.
- Evaluate each option independently, as a separate true or false question. Do not look for a pattern across options.
- An MSQ where you are certain about two options and unsure about a third is not a safe attempt. It is a coin toss for the whole mark.
- Because there is no penalty, attempt it if you have any reasonable basis. Just do not spend three minutes on a guess.
NAT Strategy
No negative marking makes NAT the most attemptable format, and also the format where careless errors cost the most.
- Check the sign. A negative answer entered as positive earns zero.
- Check the decimal places. If the question asks for an answer correct to two decimal places, give exactly that.
- Check the unit implied by the question before converting anything.
- Do the final calculation on the virtual calculator rather than mentally, because arithmetic slips under time pressure are common.
- Write the answer on your rough sheet before typing it, then verify what you typed matches.
The Virtual Calculator
GATE provides an on screen scientific calculator and disables the physical keyboard for numerical entry. Two things follow from this.
First, it is slower than you expect. Every click takes time. A calculation that takes fifteen seconds on a physical calculator can take forty five seconds on the virtual one.
Second, it needs practice. Students who first meet the virtual calculator on exam day lose several minutes across the paper simply fumbling with it. Attempt at least ten full length mocks on an interface that replicates it.
A Realistic Time Plan
Three hours for 65 questions works out to roughly 2 minutes and 45 seconds per question. That average is misleading, because a 1 mark aptitude question and a 2 mark estimation question are not comparable.

The single rule that protects your score: never let one difficult question consume the time that three easier questions needed. If a question has taken four minutes and you are not close, mark it and move. You can return. You cannot get the four minutes back.
You Cannot Practise Exam Pattern on Paper

Common Pattern Mistakes
- Treating MSQs like MCQs. Selecting one option out of habit when more than one is correct earns zero.
- Guessing MCQs to raise the attempt count. A higher attempt count with a lower score is a worse result.
- Leaving NAT questions blank because the answer looks odd. There is no penalty. If you have a number, enter it.
- Skipping General Aptitude to save time for Statistics. Fifteen marks of comparatively easy questions is not the section to sacrifice.
- Meeting the virtual calculator for the first time on exam day.
- No review pass. NAT entry errors are the most recoverable mistakes in the paper, and only a review pass catches them.
