What Is GATE Statistics?
Statistics, paper code ST, was introduced as a GATE paper in 2019. It is designed for candidates with a strong interest in mathematical and theoretical Statistics rather than applied data work.
Unlike a general aptitude based statistics test, GATE ST examines the mathematical foundation behind Statistics. The paper tests whether you can:
- Understand statistical definitions and theorems rather than memorise them
- Apply probability concepts to unfamiliar situations
- Work with distributions and transformations
- Solve estimation and testing problems
- Use matrix methods inside statistical models
- Interpret stochastic processes
- Handle multivariate and regression questions
- Calculate accurately under time pressure
This makes it best suited to students who are comfortable with mathematical reasoning and want to study Statistics beyond formula based methods.

The GATE 2027 syllabus has been revised. Statistics is now presented in 12 sections instead of 10.

Joint Distributions and Convergence of Random Variables are new as separate headings. They were previously folded inside the distributions block. If you are wondering whether you need to restart your preparation, the short answer is no.

Should You Pair Statistics With a Second Paper?
With ST as your primary paper, you may add CS, DA, MA or XH as a second paper. The application fee is charged separately for each.
A student aiming at data driven programmes often pairs ST with DA. A student from a mathematics background may prefer MA. Before deciding, check the eligibility requirements of the programmes you actually want, and be honest about whether you have time to prepare two papers well rather than two papers poorly.

How to Prepare
Knowing the syllabus is not the same as scoring in the paper. A working preparation cycle for GATE ST looks like this:
- Fix the official syllabus as your only checklist
- Build the mathematical base first, meaning Calculus and Matrix Theory
- Move topic by topic and solve questions the same week you finish the theory
- Attempt previous year questions immediately after each topic, not at the end
- Take timed tests regularly so speed and accuracy develop alongside understanding
- Keep an error notebook and revisit it every week
- Revise in cycles, because one reading is never enough for Convergence, Estimation or Testing
Reading theory without solving problems creates a false sense of preparation. It is the single most common reason strong students underperform in GATE ST.
