Welcome back to Part 28 of Module 7, updated for the UPSC ISS 2026 to 2027 cycle. Euler’s method is wonderfully simple and disappointingly inaccurate: a single tangent drawn at the start of each step lets the solution drift, leaving a global error of only . The repair is a two step feedback loop, the Modified Euler’s Method, our entry into the world of Predictor Corrector techniques.
The Predictor makes a rough Euler guess, . The Corrector then averages the starting slope with the slope at the predicted point, , and iterates. The averaging is secretly the Trapezoidal Rule, which lifts the local error to and the global error to .
Exam context: 80 questions, 200 marks, 2 hours, 2.5 marks per question, about 0.83 deducted per wrong answer. The theory identities on this page, the Trapezoidal bridge and the Runge Kutta equivalence, are recurring one liners.
This post is Part 28 of the Differential Equations Guide (Module 7), inside our UPSC ISS Numerical Analysis Complete Guide. Roadmap at the UPSC ISS hub.
The Story of Esha and the Weather Balloon
Esha, an ISS officer at the Indian Meteorological Department, tracks the altitude of a weather balloon whose rate of ascent depends on constantly shifting winds. She must predict its altitude 10 minutes ahead.
The plain Euler approach would read the wind’s slope right now, draw one straight line, and hope. Winds change continuously, so that line will miss the true curved path. Esha instead runs a loop: first a prediction, the rough straight line guess of the future position; then a correction, reading the wind’s slope at that predicted position and redrawing her path along the average of the current and future slopes. The trajectory bends with the wind, and the forecast lands.
The Core Concept: Predictor and Corrector
For with , the method abandons the single slope idea and approximates the underlying integral by the Trapezoidal Rule, in two phases.
Phase 1, the Predictor. A crude estimate of at by the plain forward Euler step:
Phase 2, the Corrector. Take the arithmetic mean of the slope at the start and the slope at the predicted point:
The iteration loop. Feed each corrected value back into the right side and repeat until two successive values agree to the desired decimal accuracy.
The Major Upgrade: Error Bounds
Why bother averaging? For a full degree of accuracy. The basic Euler local error is ; because the corrector is geometrically the Trapezoidal Rule, the Modified Euler local truncation error rises to:
and the global error correspondingly becomes . One extra evaluation per step buys an entire order of accuracy, which is why this method is the standard workhorse upgrade.
StatChakravyuh Pro Tips
- The integration bridge. Asked which rule the Modified Euler method approximates the integral with, the answer is strictly the Trapezoidal Rule. The error shape is the same trapezoidal signature from Part 19.
- The Runge Kutta identity. Basic Euler equals the first order Runge Kutta method; Modified Euler equals the second order Runge Kutta method. This matching pair is a recurring question.
- Predictor versus corrector recognition. The formula using only information from is the Predictor; the formula carrying the multiplier and requiring information from is the Corrector.
Solved Example Masterclass
Question: Given with , use the Modified Euler’s Method to find the first corrected value at .
Step 1: Parameters. , , , , so .
Step 2: The Predictor.
Step 3: The Corrector. Future slope at the predicted point: . Then:
Final Answer: , verified by hand, executed comfortably inside 60 seconds with no calculator.
Common Traps to Avoid
Trap 1: Corrupting the whole chain with a predictor slip. Every corrector iteration inherits the predictor, so nail the rough guess first.
Trap 2: Using the corrector slope at the wrong point. The second slope is evaluated at the predicted future point , never at the start again.
Trap 3: Swapping the error orders. Modified Euler is local and global ; plain Euler is local and global .
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the Modified Euler method differ from the basic one?
Basic Euler rides a single starting slope for the whole step and drifts. Modified Euler averages the starting slope with the predicted ending slope, following the curvature and improving accuracy by a full order.
What is a predictor corrector method?
A two phase technique: a simple formula predicts a crude future value, then a more accurate formula uses that crude value to produce a refined final answer.
What is the local truncation error?
Of order , inherited from the Trapezoidal Rule that underlies the corrector.
How does the method connect to the Runge Kutta family?
It is mathematically identical to the Runge Kutta method of the second order.
When does the corrector iteration stop?
When two successive corrected values agree to the desired decimal accuracy.
