Statistical Bodies and Reports: ASI, SRS, PLFS, NFHS, UDISE Plus

Banking and economic decisions only work if data is reliable. India runs some of the largest statistical operations in the world. As an ISS aspirant, knowing these surveys is non negotiable.

The Indian Statistical Service is built around credible national data. Whether you are answering questions on labour, health, education, industry, or vital events, you should know the source of every number you quote. The Annual Survey of Industries, Sample Registration System, Periodic Labour Force Survey, National Family Health Survey, and UDISE Plus are the five most exam relevant data sources of the year. Master these and your answers carry real authority.

Annual Survey of Industries

ASI is the principal source of statistics on the registered manufacturing sector in India. It is conducted by the National Statistical Office under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. ASI provides estimates on output, employment, capital, value added, and emoluments at the factory and state level. It is a primary input for industrial policy and for the National Accounts.

Sample Registration System

SRS is conducted by the Office of the Registrar General of India. It provides annual estimates of birth rate, death rate, infant mortality rate, neonatal mortality rate, and maternal mortality ratio at the state and national levels. It uses a dual record system to ensure accuracy. SRS estimates are widely used for monitoring health policy outcomes.

Periodic Labour Force Survey

PLFS replaced the older Employment and Unemployment Surveys. It provides annual rural and urban estimates and quarterly urban estimates of labour force participation rate, worker population ratio, and unemployment rate using both Usual Status and Current Weekly Status. PLFS is the most authoritative source on India’s evolving labour market and is critical for any answer on employment.

National Family Health Survey

NFHS is conducted by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare with the International Institute for Population Sciences as the nodal agency. It provides detailed data on fertility, family planning, infant and child mortality, maternal and child health, nutrition, anaemia, women’s empowerment, and access to health services. NFHS-5 covered 2019-21 and pegged the national Total Fertility Rate at 2.0.

UDISE Plus

Unified District Information System for Education Plus is the most comprehensive education database in India. It captures data on schools, teachers, infrastructure, enrolment, dropout, learning outcomes proxies, and digital availability across school education. It is essential for any answer on the Right to Education, midday meal, foundational literacy, and learning outcomes.

A Real Aspirant Story

Imagine an aspirant named Sneha writing a Mains answer on rural employment. If she only says, employment is rising in rural India, the answer is weak. If she says, the rural Labour Force Participation Rate from PLFS rose during the recent rounds, supported by an increase in self employment, the same sentence becomes a high scoring sentence. That is the entire power of citing the right statistical source.
