What Makes JAM MS Different
MS is not a pure Statistics paper. The official brochure divides it into two clearly weighted parts.

That is the official syllabus level description. It indicates the balance of the syllabus and should not be read as a guarantee of the exact number of questions or marks from each part in any given year.
The practical reading is simple. Statistics is your major focus and Mathematics is an essential supporting component. Students who treat MS as a Statistics paper and skip the Mathematics sections lose a quarter of the syllabus. Students who over invest in Mathematics because it feels more familiar lose more.

Should You Take a Second Paper?
Mathematical Statistics is scheduled in the afternoon session. A candidate may take a second JAM paper only if it is in a different session.
That makes the forenoon papers your options: Chemistry, Geology and Mathematics (MA).
MS plus MA is the combination worth considering. For a general category candidate the second paper costs Rs 700 rather than Rs 2,000, and the two syllabi overlap in real analysis, calculus and linear algebra. You sit both on the same day and receive two separate All India Ranks.
The honest caveat: the overlap is only in the Mathematics portion. JAM MA also requires Differential Equations and Group Theory, neither of which appears in MS. Budget for that before committing.
A Preparation Sequence That Works
The sections depend on each other, so order matters more than most students assume.

Do not start Estimation before Sampling Distributions is solid. Do not start Sampling Distributions before Univariate and Multivariate Distributions are solid. Students who skip this order end up studying the same sections twice.
Reading theory without solving problems creates a false sense of preparation. It is the most common reason strong students underperform in JAM MS.

Considering GATE Statistics Too?
Many of our students prepare for both. The syllabi overlap substantially in probability, distributions, estimation and testing, but they are not the same paper and the differences matter.
GATE ST includes multivariate analysis, regression as a full section, minimal sufficiency, UMPU tests and singular value decomposition. None of these are in JAM MS. JAM MS includes descriptive statistics and stochastic processes, which sit differently in GATE ST.
