Section 1: Real Analysis

Riemann integration, meaning definite integrals and their properties. Fundamental theorem of calculus.

Where students lose marks. Bolzano Weierstrass and the intermediate value property are frequently tested through conceptual true or false statements rather than computation. Learn the exact statement and one counterexample for each condition you can drop.

Section 2: Multivariable Calculus and Differential Equations

Functions of Two or Three Real Variables

Limit. Continuity. Partial derivatives. Total derivative. Maxima and minima.

Integral Calculus

Double and triple integrals. Change of order of integration.

Calculating surface areas and volumes using double integrals. Calculating volumes using triple integrals.

Differential Equations

Bernoulli’s equation. Exact differential equations. Integrating factors. Orthogonal trajectories. Homogeneous differential equations. Method of separation of variables.

Linear differential equations of second order with constant coefficients. Method of variation of parameters. Cauchy Euler equation.

This is the section that does not overlap with JAM MS. If you are preparing Mathematical Statistics and adding Mathematics as a second paper, Differential Equations is entirely new material. Nothing in the MS syllabus prepares you for it. Budget three to four weeks.

Section 3: Linear Algebra and Algebra

Basic Algebra

Permutations and combinations. Binomial theorem.

Matrices

Systems of linear equations. Rank. Nullity. Rank nullity theorem. Inverse. Determinant. Eigenvalues. Eigenvectors.

Finite Dimensional Vector Spaces

Linear independence of vectors. Basis. Dimension. Linear transformations. Matrix representation. Range space. Null space. Rank nullity theorem.

Groups

Cyclic groups. Abelian groups. Non abelian groups. Permutation groups. Normal subgroups. Quotient groups. Lagrange’s theorem for finite groups. Group homomorphisms.

The second section with no MS overlap. Group Theory has no counterpart anywhere in the Mathematical Statistics syllabus. Statistics students consistently underestimate it because it is a different kind of mathematics: structural and proof oriented rather than computational. Start it early.

What Is NOT in the JAM MA 2027 Syllabus

Verify anything you plan to study against the official brochure. The three section structure is narrower than many older topic lists suggest, and several topics that students expect to find are not listed.

Topics commonly assumed to be included but not listed in the 2027 MA syllabus:

Do not treat this list as final without checking. Confirm against the official Annexure I before dropping any topic from your plan, and re check if IIT Kharagpur issues a corrigendum. The cost of studying an extra topic is a few weeks. The cost of skipping a topic that is actually in the syllabus is much higher.

How to Use This Syllabus as a Checklist

  1. Paste the syllabus into a spreadsheet, one row per topic.
  2. Add four columns: Theory Done, Questions Solved, PYQ Done, Revised.
  3. Never tick Theory Done alone. A topic is finished when Questions Solved is ticked too.
  4. Tick PYQ Done immediately after each topic, not at the end of the syllabus.
