Three Things Before You Start Solving
- Solve topic wise first, full papers later. Pull every sequences and series question across all years and solve them together. Then differential equations. Then group theory. Full length attempts come after the syllabus is done.
- Check older questions against the current syllabus. The JAM MA 2027 syllabus is presented as three consolidated sections. Older papers may contain questions on topics not listed for 2027, such as vector calculus. Cross check against the 2027 syllabus before spending time on an unfamiliar question type.
- Group Theory questions repay the most practice. For students coming from a Statistics background this is the least familiar section, and previous year questions are the fastest way to learn what level of proof reasoning is actually expected.
Also Useful for MS Candidates
Mathematics is in the forenoon session and Mathematical Statistics is in the afternoon, so the two can be taken together. Even if you are only sitting MS, the JAM MA papers are excellent extra practice for the Mathematics quarter of the MS syllabus, particularly sequences and series, calculus and matrices.

Solving on Paper Is Not the Same as Solving on Screen
JAM is a computer based test with a virtual calculator, a disabled keyboard for numerical entry and a running clock. Practise on an interface that matches the real one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are JAM MA previous year papers still relevant for 2027?
Largely yes. Real analysis, calculus, differential equations and linear algebra are stable areas. Cross check any unfamiliar question against the 2027 syllabus, since the syllabus is presented in three consolidated sections and some older topics may not be listed.
Is there negative marking in JAM MA papers?
Yes, in Section A only. An incorrect 1 mark MCQ costs one third of a mark and an incorrect 2 mark MCQ costs two thirds. Sections B and C carry no negative marking.
How many questions are in a JAM MA paper?
60 questions carrying 100 marks, across three sections, in three hours.
Can JAM MA papers help with JAM MS preparation?
Yes, for the Mathematics portion. Sections 1 to 3 of the MS syllabus cover sequences and series, calculus and matrices, all of which appear in JAM MA papers.
