The Three Sections
The JAM MA 2027 syllabus is presented as three consolidated sections rather than the longer topic list some older material uses.
| No. | Section | What It Covers |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Real Analysis | Sequences and series of real numbers, functions of one real variable |
| 2 | Multivariable Calculus and Differential Equations | Functions of two or three real variables, integral calculus, differential equations |
| 3 | Linear Algebra and Algebra | Basic algebra, matrices, finite dimensional vector spaces, groups |
Check your source before you plan. A lot of JAM MA material online is organised around an older, longer list of topics. Work from the official JAM 2027 Information Brochure, Annexure I, and rebuild your checklist around these three sections. Do not assume a topic is in the syllabus because a coaching module includes it.

Why MA Matters for Statistics Students
This is the reason we cover Mathematics alongside Mathematical Statistics.
MA is in the forenoon session. MS is in the afternoon session. Under the JAM two paper rule, a candidate may take two papers only if they are in different sessions. That makes MS plus MA one of the few workable combinations, and both are written on the same day.
The Overlap Is Real, but Partial
If you are already preparing JAM MS, you have covered a meaningful part of MA before you start.
| MA Topic | Already Covered in MS? |
|---|---|
| Sequences and series of real numbers | Yes, MS Section 1 |
| Functions of one real variable, limits, continuity, differentiation | Yes, MS Section 2 |
| Taylor’s theorem, maxima and minima | Yes, MS Section 2 |
| Riemann integration, double and triple integrals | Largely, MS Section 2 |
| Functions of two variables, partial derivatives | Yes, MS Section 2 |
| Matrices, rank, determinant, eigenvalues, vector spaces | Yes, MS Section 3 |
| Differential Equations | No. New for MA. |
| Group Theory | No. New for MA. |
| Linear transformations, matrix representation | Partly new |
| Permutations, combinations, binomial theorem | Partly new |
The honest assessment. Roughly the Mathematics quarter of your MS preparation transfers directly. What you must add is Differential Equations and Group Theory, plus linear transformations. That is real additional work, not a weekend of revision.
The financial side is favourable. For a general category candidate the second paper costs Rs 700 rather than Rs 2,000. Cost is not the constraint. Time is.
A Preparation Sequence That Works
| Phase | What to Cover |
|---|---|
| 1 | Sequences and series, convergence tests, power series |
| 2 | Functions of one real variable, mean value theorems, Taylor’s theorem, Riemann integration |
| 3 | Functions of two or three variables, partial derivatives, maxima and minima |
| 4 | Double and triple integrals, areas and volumes |
| 5 | Differential equations, from first order methods through second order linear equations |
| 6 | Matrices, determinants, rank, eigenvalues, Cayley Hamilton |
| 7 | Finite dimensional vector spaces, linear transformations, rank nullity theorem |
| 8 | Group theory, from cyclic and abelian groups through homomorphisms |
| Throughout | Previous year questions after each topic, then topic tests, then full length tests |
Group Theory is where most students from a Statistics background struggle, because it is the one section with no counterpart anywhere in the MS syllabus. Start it early rather than leaving it to January.
Practice. Improve. Repeat.
Practice built around the real JAM pattern: three sections, sixty questions, three hours, on an interface that matches the exam with a virtual calculator and a disabled keyboard for numerical entry.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the paper code for Mathematics in JAM?
The paper code is MA.
When is the IIT JAM MA 2027 exam?
14 February 2027, in the forenoon session from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm.
How many questions and marks are in JAM MA?
60 questions carrying 100 marks, across three sections, in three hours.
How many sections are in the JAM MA syllabus?
Three: Real Analysis, Multivariable Calculus and Differential Equations, and Linear Algebra and Algebra.
Can I take JAM MA and JAM MS together?
Yes. MA is in the forenoon session and MS is in the afternoon session, so the combination is permitted under the two paper rule.
Is Group Theory in the JAM MA 2027 syllabus?
Yes. Section 3 includes cyclic groups, abelian and non abelian groups, permutation groups, normal subgroups, quotient groups, Lagrange’s theorem for finite groups and group homomorphisms.
Are Differential Equations in JAM MA?
Yes. Section 2 includes Bernoulli’s equation, exact differential equations, integrating factors, orthogonal trajectories, homogeneous differential equations, separation of variables, second order linear equations with constant coefficients, variation of parameters and the Cauchy Euler equation.
Does JAM MA have a General Aptitude section?
No. All 100 marks come from the Mathematics syllabus.
Is there negative marking in JAM MA?
Yes, in Section A only. Sections B and C have no negative marking.
