A note on conflicting reports. Some news websites reported that JAM 2027 registration had been moved to 12 September 2026. The official JAM 2027 website and the official Information Brochure both state 5 September 2026. Always treat the official JAM website as the final authority, and verify dates there before you act on anything you read elsewhere.

Examination Schedule and Sessions

JAM 2027 is held on a single day, 14 February 2027, across two sessions.

SessionTimePapers
Forenoon (FN)9:30 am to 12:30 pmChemistry (CY), Geology (GG), Mathematics (MA)
Afternoon (AN)2:30 pm to 5:30 pmBiotechnology (BT), Economics (EN), Mathematical Statistics (MS), Physics (PH)

Each paper runs for three hours.

Candidates with disabilities are eligible for one hour of compensatory time for each paper, making the end time 1:30 pm for the forenoon session and 6:30 pm for the afternoon session. The relevant forms must be completed during registration to avail compensatory time or the services of a scribe.

The Two Paper Rule

A candidate may appear for one or two test papers. Two papers may be chosen only if they are scheduled in different sessions.

This produces a short list of workable combinations. For Statistics and Mathematics aspirants specifically:

CombinationPossible?Why
MS + MAYesMS is afternoon, MA is forenoon
MS + CYYesDifferent sessions
MS + GGYesDifferent sessions
MS + ENNoBoth in the afternoon session
MS + PHNoBoth in the afternoon session
MA + CYNoBoth in the forenoon session

MS plus MA is the combination that matters for most of our students. It is one exam day, two All India Ranks, and two sets of programmes you can apply to. Before choosing it, check that you can genuinely prepare both syllabi rather than half preparing each.

IIT JAM 2027 Registration

Registration is completed online through the JAM Online Application Processing System, known as JOAPS, at the official JAM website.

  • Qualifying degree information
  • Category certificate, if applicable, issued on or after 1 April 2026

IIT JAM 2027 Application Fee

CategoryOne Test PaperTwo Test Papers
Female, SC, ST and PwD candidatesRs 1,000Rs 1,350
All other candidatesRs 2,000Rs 2,700

The application fee is non refundable under any circumstances.

Notice that a second paper is not charged at full price. For a general category candidate the second paper costs Rs 700 rather than Rs 2,000. If you were already considering MS plus MA, the cost is a much smaller factor than the preparation time.

Correction Fee

An additional fee of Rs 300 applies if you need to change your category, gender, examination city or date of birth after submission. The same Rs 300 applies to adding an additional test paper or changing your test paper selection. Correction is available through the JAM portal within the announced window, so check the official site for the current deadline.

The cleanest approach is to get it right the first time. Read every field twice before you submit.

IIT JAM 2027 Eligibility

There is no age restriction for JAM 2027.

You are eligible to appear for JAM 2027 if you have either:

  • Completed your undergraduate degree, or
  • Will appear in the final examination of your qualifying degree in 2027

There is no minimum percentage requirement to appear for the examination itself.

Appearing Is Not the Same as Being Admitted

This is where students most often get caught out, so it is worth being precise. Qualifying JAM gives you a rank. Admission requires three things together:

JAM qualification + Programme Eligibility Requirements + Minimum Educational Qualifications

The Eligibility Requirements and Minimum Educational Qualifications are set by each admitting institute for each programme, and they differ. A candidate with a strong JAM MS rank may still not be eligible for a particular M.Sc. programme if their undergraduate subject combination does not meet that programme’s stated requirements.

Two conditions apply in every case:

  • The undergraduate programme must be completed before the admission date of the admitting institute
  • Proof of having passed the qualifying degree must be submitted within the timeline set by the admitting institute

Build your target list before you build your study plan. Work backwards: pick the programmes you want, read their Eligibility Requirements and Minimum Educational Qualifications in the official brochure, then set a target rank.

Admit Card

The JAM 2027 admit card will be downloaded from the JAM portal. It is not sent by post or email.

The admit card carries your name, registration number, photograph, test paper, examination date, session, examination centre and centre address.

Check three things the moment you download it: that the test paper shown is the one you selected, that the session is correct, and that your personal details match your identity document. Carry a printout, preferably in colour, along with a valid original photo identity document.

Result and All India Rank

JAM results are reported as an All India Rank in each test paper. A candidate who appears for two papers receives a separate rank in each.

Admission then depends on your All India Rank, the applicable reservation policy, programme eligibility, seat availability and programme specific requirements. Detailed admission timelines are published in the JAM 2027 Admission Brochure, expected in the second week of March 2027.

Registration Takes an Afternoon. The Paper Takes Five Months.

Practice built around the real JAM pattern: three sections, sixty questions, three hours, on an interface that matches the exam with a virtual calculator and a disabled keyboard for numerical entry.

What to Do After Applying

  1. Download your paper’s official syllabus and use it as your only checklist. See the JAM MS syllabus or the JAM MA syllabus.
  2. Understand the three section structure before you start practising. Read the exam pattern and marking scheme.
  3. Start previous year papers early, topic by topic. JAM MS papers and JAM MA papers.
