The Session Schedule Decides Everything
JAM 2027 runs both sessions on the same day. Which session your paper falls in is the single most important scheduling fact, because it determines whether you can sit a second paper.
| Session | Time | Papers |
|---|---|---|
| Forenoon | 9:30 am to 12:30 pm | Chemistry (CY), Geology (GG), Mathematics (MA) |
| Afternoon | 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm | Biotechnology (BT), Economics (EN), Mathematical Statistics (MS), Physics (PH) |
A candidate may appear for one or two papers, but two papers only if they are scheduled in different sessions.
This means MS and MA can be taken together. Mathematics is in the forenoon and Mathematical Statistics is in the afternoon, on the same day. For a Statistics student with a solid mathematical background, that is a genuine second shot at an IIT seat for a discounted second paper fee.
Common to Every JAM Paper
These two pages apply to all seven JAM 2027 papers. Read them once, whichever paper you are appearing for.
Registration, Dates and Eligibility
The registration schedule, the step by step JOAPS process, application fee by category, the correction window, eligibility rules and the documents you need ready before you start.

Choose Your Paper
Mathematical Statistics (MS)
The primary JAM paper for Statistics aspirants. Twelve sections split as approximately 25 percent Mathematics and 75 percent Statistics. Scheduled in the afternoon session.
One important change for 2027: the twelfth section is Stochastic Processes, covering Markov chains and the Poisson process.
Go to IIT JAM Mathematical Statistics
Mathematics (MA)
Three consolidated sections covering Real Analysis, Multivariable Calculus with Differential Equations, and Linear Algebra with Group Theory. Scheduled in the forenoon session, which makes it the natural second paper for an MS candidate.
Economics (EN)
Coming soon. Economics is in the afternoon session, so it cannot be combined with Mathematical Statistics.
What Is IIT JAM?
The Joint Admission Test for Masters is a national level entrance examination for admission to postgraduate programmes in science and related disciplines at the IITs, and at IISc and a number of other institutions that accept JAM scores.
JAM 2027 is conducted for seven test papers: Biotechnology, Chemistry, Economics, Geology, Mathematical Statistics, Mathematics and Physics. All papers are Computer Based Tests of three hours.
There is no age restriction. Candidates who have completed their undergraduate degree, or who will appear in the final examination of their qualifying degree in 2027, are eligible to appear.
Qualifying JAM does not by itself guarantee admission. Admission depends on your All India Rank in the test paper, the reservation policy, seat availability, and the Eligibility Requirements and Minimum Educational Qualifications set by each admitting institute for each programme.
JAM Compared With GATE
Many Statistics students consider both. The papers are genuinely different.
| IIT JAM 2027 | GATE 2027 | |
|---|---|---|
| Conducted by | IIT Kharagpur | IIT Madras |
| Purpose | Master’s admission | Master’s and doctoral admission, and some recruitment |
| Exam date | 14 February 2027 | 6 to 21 February 2027 |
| Questions | 60 | 65 |
| General Aptitude | None | 15 marks |
| Sections | Three named sections | Not sectioned |
| Registration closes | 12 October 2026 | 27 September 2026 |
The biggest structural difference is that JAM has no General Aptitude section. All 100 marks come from your subject.
If you are weighing the two, our GATE Statistics section covers the ST paper in the same depth.
Practice. Improve. Repeat.
Practice built around the real JAM pattern: three sections, sixty questions, three hours, on an interface that matches the exam with a virtual calculator and a disabled keyboard for numerical entry.
