Say it plainly, once, without a spiral of apology, and wherever you can, attach the part you do know or ask to reason it out. The public record of recommended candidates proves this is not a consolation strategy. A 2020 candidate said sorry to three consecutive questions on branches of official statistics, said it again on time series, and was recommended with 117 out of 200. The 2024 topper could not answer a run of official statistics questions, wrote as much in their own account, and still ranked first with 116.
Day 16 is about the single most rank saving sentence in the room, and about the one situation where it must never be used.
Why honesty outscores bluffing
The board is not scoring the count of questions you answered. Reading the scripts closely, it is scoring three things: whether you understand what you claim, whether you are honest at the edge of your knowledge, and whether you stay composed while thinking. An honest I do not know scores full marks on two of those three and moves the board to a territory where you may score on the first.
A bluff does the opposite. Boards in the scripts follow up one level deeper as a matter of habit, and a bluff collapses at exactly that level, taking your credibility on every earlier answer with it. There is no recommended candidate in the public record whose account describes bluffing successfully. There are many whose accounts describe not knowing and moving on.
The three formats
The clean one. I do not know this, sir. Full stop, eye contact, no explanation. Use it when you have nothing. In the scripts this is the most common form, and boards respond by moving on or by lowering the rung, as one did when a candidate could not explain deseasonalising a series and was immediately offered the easier question of removing trend instead. Take that help gratefully; it is the board wanting you to score.
The partial one. I am not certain, but I believe it is this, and the part I am unsure of is that. One candidate answered a question on who conducts a survey with exactly this shape, naming a ministry with a stated doubt, and the interview moved on without damage. A partial answer marked as partial is honesty with content in it.
The reasoning one. I have not seen this before, may I reason it out? Then think aloud in short steps. A 2023 candidate explained a graph’s effect by reasoning from where its axis began, prefaced with a clear I am not sure, and the board accepted the attempt. The permission matters: it signals you know the difference between knowledge and reconstruction.
The one rule inside all three
Say sorry once, if at all, and never escalate. The 2020 candidate’s own account notes the nerves rising by the third consecutive sorry, and the score survived, but the lesson is to keep the sentence flat: a short I do not know, and attention to the next question. Do not add I will read about this to every miss. Do not explain why you did not study it. The next answer matters far more than the miss, so spend your composure there.
Where I do not know is not allowed
There is one category where the sentence marks a preparation gap rather than a knowledge gap, and boards read it exactly that way: your own form. A fact inside your listed hobby, the founder of your own university, a number about your own district, the meaning of your own specialisation, why this service. These are promises you made in writing. The scripts show boards probing precisely these, and an I do not know there is not honesty, it is unpreparedness. Days 3 to 6 of this series exist so that this never happens to you.
Your task for today
Ask a friend to fire ten questions at you from outside your comfort zone, and answer each with one of the three formats, aloud, without a single extra word of apology. Then ask them to fire five questions from your own form, where the formats are forbidden and the answers must be ready. That contrast, practised once, is the whole lesson.
