The National Statistical Office runs the surveys that measure Indian life: the Periodic Labour Force Survey for employment, the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey for spending, the Annual Survey of Industries for the factory sector, and the Time Use Survey for how Indians spend their day. Real ISS boards have asked about every one of these, by name.
The evidence first, as always in this series. Across the transcripts of recommended candidates: one board asked which survey measures unemployment and who conducts it. PLFS: the survey that changed this year
If one survey deserves your deepest preparation, it is the Periodic Labour Force Survey, because it was rebuilt recently and boards love asking about what just changed.
The verified facts. PLFS is the NSO’s employment and unemployment survey. From January 2025 its design was revamped, and it now produces monthly bulletins of the three key indicators, the Labour Force Participation Rate, the Worker Population Ratio and the Unemployment Rate, for both rural and urban India, using the Current Weekly Status approach. Quarterly estimates, earlier urban only, now cover rural areas too. Annual results continue in both usual status and current weekly status.
The latest available bulletin as this post is published, for June 2026, put the all India unemployment rate at 5.5 percent, the labour force participation rate at 54.4 percent, and the female participation rate at 32.7 percent. Do not memorise these forever: the single smartest habit before your interview is to open the newest PLFS bulletin on the MoSPI website the night before, because a recent recommended candidate was asked exactly whether they follow MoSPI releases.
One definition pair to hold cold, since boards test it: usual status classifies a person by their activity over the last year, while current weekly status uses the last seven days. Monthly bulletins use the weekly lens.
HCES: the survey that rebuilt the CPI
The Household Consumption Expenditure Survey measures what households actually spend on. Its importance tripled this year for one verified reason: the new Consumer Price Index series released in February 2026 built its entire item basket and weights from HCES 2023-24. When a board asks why the CPI needed a new base, the honest one line answer is that consumption had changed and HCES 2023-24 finally measured how.
HCES also matters for poverty measurement, which is exactly how a real board raised it, because consumption distributions are the raw material of poverty lines. Know that connection in one sentence and the question is yours.
ASI and the Time Use Survey
The Annual Survey of Industries is the principal source on the registered factory sector: employment, output, value added. One clean line for the room: ASI tells us what organised manufacturing produces and employs, year after year.
The Time Use Survey records how people spend the hours of their day, and its board tested connection to the national accounts is unpaid work: cooking, care, household labour that GDP does not count. A candidate who can say that in two sentences has answered a real board question from the 2022 cycle.
How to carry surveys into the room
