A student in our community wrote last month with a familiar complaint. She had studied the Indus Valley Civilization three times, could list Mohenjo daro, Harappa, Dholavira and Lothal without pausing, and still froze when a mock test asked what the Rakhigarhi excavations had added to our understanding of Harappan society. She knew the sites. She did not know the science. That gap is exactly what this article closes.

Short answer. Rakhigarhi in Haryana, spread over about 550 hectares, is one of the largest urban settlements of the Harappan Civilization. In June 2026 the Archaeological Survey of India transferred three complete human skeletons and associated fragments from the site to the Anthropological Survey of India laboratory in Kolkata for DNA, isotope and bone analysis. Because the Harappan script is still undeciphered, these remains are the most direct evidence we have about who the Harappans actually were.

What exactly happened at Rakhigarhi in 2026

Under a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding, the Archaeological Survey of India handed over Harappan skeletal material to the Anthropological Survey of India. Three complete skeletons and a set of associated fragments have been moved to the Kolkata laboratory of the Anthropological Survey for advanced scientific analysis.

The transfer matters because the two organisations do different work. The Archaeological Survey excavates and conserves. The Anthropological Survey studies human populations. Moving the material from one to the other converts a set of excavated objects into a research programme on ancestry, health, diet and migration.

Why is Rakhigarhi so important among Harappan sites?

Rakhigarhi is located in the Hisar district of Haryana and spreads across roughly 550 hectares, which makes it one of the largest known urban settlements of the civilization. Excavations there have produced four things that are unusually valuable together.

  • Continuous habitation. The site was occupied from the Early Harappan phase through the Mature Harappan phase, so it records change over time rather than a single moment.
  • Urban planning. Well laid settlements with sophisticated drainage, matching the standard Harappan pattern of grid streets and civic engineering.
  • Economic evidence. Craft production centres and signs of long distance trade networks.
  • Organised burials. Mound Number 7 has been identified as a major burial area, and 56 human skeletons have been excavated from it. Very few Harappan sites offer a burial ground of that size.

That last point is the reason Rakhigarhi keeps returning to the news. Cities can be reconstructed from bricks. People cannot.

What did the Rakhigarhi DNA study actually find?

Ancient DNA analysis was carried out on the remains of a woman recovered from the burial mound and dated to approximately 4,600 years ago. The headline finding was an absence: the genome showed no Steppe pastoralist genetic component.

This single result feeds directly into one of the most debated questions in Indian history, namely the timing and nature of Indo Aryan migration into the subcontinent and the wider question of the origins of ancient South Asian populations. The finding is one data point from one individual, not a settled conclusion, and researchers themselves treat it with caution. For your answer, the honest and correct framing is that the study contributes evidence to an ongoing academic debate rather than closing it.

Read that table as a sentence and you have the whole significance of the study: who they were, what they ate, how long they lived and what made them ill.

Why does this matter so much for the Harappan Civilization?

The Harappan script remains undeciphered. That one fact changes everything about how the civilization is studied. For most ancient societies, historians begin with what people wrote about themselves. For the Harappans, there is no readable text at all, so every conclusion about their society has been built from objects: seals, weights, drains, pottery and city plans.

Skeletal and genetic evidence is therefore not a supplement to the written record. It is the substitute for it. Bones can answer questions that bricks cannot, including whether the population was local or migrant, whether nutrition differed between groups, and whether disease patterns changed as cities grew.

How is this asked in the UPSC ISS General Studies paper?

Question 1 of the paper is always History, and it moves from Ancient through Medieval to Modern India across five parts. The Indus Valley Civilization has appeared four times since 2014, which places it among the most repeated Ancient India themes in the paper.

The examiner is unlikely to ask you to narrate the Rakhigarhi excavation. What they can ask is a version of a standard question with a current hook attached, for example: discuss the significance of recent scientific studies for our understanding of the Harappan Civilization. That is a question about method and evidence, not about dates.

Model answer skeleton, about 200 words

  1. Opening line. Identify Rakhigarhi, its location, its size and the transfer of remains from the Archaeological Survey of India to the Anthropological Survey of India.
  2. Point one. The script is undeciphered, so skeletal and genetic evidence is the most direct source of information about Harappan people.
  3. Point two. The DNA result from the woman dated about 4,600 years ago, and its place in the Indo Aryan migration debate, stated carefully as contested evidence.
  4. Point three. The four scientific methods and what each recovers: ancestry, diet, physical profile and disease.
  5. Point four. Rakhigarhi’s own archaeological value: continuous habitation, planning, craft production and organised burials.
  6. Closing line. The study turns archaeology into an interdisciplinary science and may reshape our understanding of who the Harappans were.

Practise writing this out by hand once. If it runs to 260 words, cut the description of Harappan urban features first, because that is the part the examiner already assumes you know.

Three mistakes students make on this topic

  1. Overstating the DNA finding. Writing that the study has “disproved” Aryan migration is factually careless and costs marks with an informed examiner. Write that it contributes evidence to a continuing debate.
  2. Turning it into a site description. A question about a scientific study is not an invitation to list Harappan cities. Mention sites only as one supporting line.
  3. Ignoring the limitations. Ancient DNA degrades in hot climates, sample sizes are small, and interpretation is contested. One sentence acknowledging this makes an answer look far more mature than one that does not.
