The investment pledge
Japan reaffirmed and expanded its earlier investment commitments to India. As part of the strengthened partnership, Japan pledged a fresh long term investment in the order of trillions of yen, including a notable focus on semiconductors and AI cooperation. Japanese majors continue to deepen their footprint in Indian automobiles, electronics, and infrastructure.
Defence and security cooperation
India and Japan have institutionalised their defence dialogue through the 2 plus 2 ministerial framework involving foreign and defence ministers. They cooperate in maritime domain awareness, exercises like Malabar in the Quad framework, and defence equipment dialogue. Japan’s interest in India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem is gradually translating into concrete projects.
Connectivity and infrastructure
Japan supports India’s flagship infrastructure projects, including the Mumbai Ahmedabad High Speed Rail, the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, and several metro rail projects across Indian cities. Japanese soft loans through JICA have funded much of India’s modern urban transport infrastructure. Japan also collaborates on North East India connectivity projects.
Semiconductors and emerging technology
With the global push for resilient semiconductor supply chains, India and Japan agreed to deepen cooperation across design, manufacturing equipment, and rare earth materials. Japanese firms are part of multiple equipment, materials, and packaging conversations under the India Semiconductor Mission. AI cooperation, including industrial AI and language models, is also expanding.
